Carvel Holten

Carvel Holton holds major degrees in Electrical engineering and a minor in physics from the University of Maryland, College Park, MD (BSEE 1970, MSEE, electro-physics, 1973). His professional life spans more than 50 years of interdisciplinary research and development in instrumentation, electrical engineering, optical physics and related applied disciplines. Past work experiences include senior and staff engineering and research positions at the US Naval Surface Warfare Center, the US Naval Academy Hydromechanics Laboratory, United Technologies Research Center, United Technologies Optical Systems, and the Imaging Research Center of Florida Atlantic University. Mr. Holton joined the Fiber & Electro-Optics research center at Virginia Tech in 1996 to conduct research in optical fibers and related disciplines such as fiber sensors and fiber optic lidar. He has developed lidar systems for undersea, meteorological, velocity, ranging and imaging applications since joining the Naval Surface Warfare center in 1970. Mr. Holton is a past member of Society of Photo-optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE). He holds 10 patents and is the author of numerous peer reviewed, society and agency publications across a wide range of engineering disciplines. He is a retired Research Faculty member of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of Virginia Tech and an independent Consulting Engineer/Scientist. Mr. Holton currently serves as a collaborating researcher in the Virginia Tech Center for Vehicle Systems and Safety (CVeSS) and the Railway Technologies Laboratory (RTL) in the Department of Mechanical engineering.
